Check out the latest The Women in Ecology & Evolution Podcast to hear me talk about my recent paper investigating why puffins are declining in the North Atlantic!

If you want to read the paper it is a available #openacess (link to my website in bio -> publications)

The episode also features a great interview with shark expert Sarah Fowler and an important conversation with several women biologists on the (ridiculous and harmful) stereotypes about what women in science should look or dress like. Give it a listen!

Thanks @the_wee_podcast for having me!

Goodbye puffins! 👋

It’s the end of the breeding season for puffins on Skomer and the adults assemble in huge numbers on the slopes in the evenings, now that they don’t have a chick to feed any more.

In a few days most of them will leave the island and start their eight-month long non breeding journey at sea, and they won’t return until next March. Only a few late breeders that still have a chick in the nest will remain for another couple of weeks.

The island will seem so quiet once they’re gone. I am going to miss them!

It’s fledging time for puffins!

Most chicks on @skomer_island have now fully developed their plumage and have started to leave the nest for their first trip out to sea.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been catching them at the nest to ring them and collect samples for our studies.

Aren’t they adorable? When they next come back to land in 2-3 years time they’ll be fully grown adults with orange legs and a big colourful beak.

Happy #worldseabirdday !
(🔈 on!)

Here is one of my favourite seabird experience: a busy Manx shearwater night on Skomer Island.

Skomer is teeming with Manxies at the moment, with the combination of dark, wet nights and of being the period where many immature birds visit, prospecting for mates and burrows. It’s loud and amazing!

Today is the 50th anniversary of the Research Station on Aldabra Atoll in Seychelles 🇸🇨

I have been extremely privileged to visit Aldabra on two occasions to do some research on the tropicbirds breeding on the island.

I’m incredibly grateful to have been able to visit and experience this amazing island with incredible wildlife and to meet the many wonderful people working as part of the @sif_seychelles team on and off the island and dedicated to preserving and protecting Aldabra.

I hope I’ll get to return one day!

‪A Manx shearwater egg 🥚

Most Manx shearwaters on Skomer Island have now laid their single egg.

Both partners will incubate it for ~51d, taking shifts of several days.‬

The first chicks will hatch around mid June, with most hatching taking place in the first half of July 🐣

‪Not all eggs will last until hatching though. Burrows can get depredated, or collapse/flood after heavy rain. ‬

📷 1: A Manx shearwater egg. The photo was taken when we briefly take the egg out on the day it has been laid to measure and weigh it.

📷 2: an eggshell found on the ground after a storm, possibly depredated by a gull after a burrow flooded or collapsed.

Manx shearwater tagging.

This year’s #fieldwork on @skomer_island includes starting a new project investigating drivers of breeding decisions in long-lived #seabirds, thanks to funding from @britishecolsoc & ASAB.

Part of this involves tagging Manx shearwaters with miniature geolocators that will record their behaviour and movements for the next 2-3 years.

The devices I use (pictured on the 2nd photo) weigh only 1g and can allow to identify the bird’s behaviour every ~10min throughout the day. They can also record up to two approximate locations each day.

I’m hoping to secure more funding in future to expand this research to more species living under different environmental conditions, to understand how the environment shapes the breeding decisions the birds make.

Shearwaters held by @trinaswhaletales. Bird handling and tagging conducted with appropriate research permits.

It’s incubation time for #puffins! 🥚

Many puffins have now laid their egg in their burrow and will spend the next ~41 days incubating the egg until their chick hatches.

Both adults take turns to incubate the egg. They change over regularly and it’s frequent to see both partners at the nest in the evening.

🎥: a pair of puffins at their burrow - can you spot the second bird hiding in the entrance?

Great first week of fieldwork on Skomer Island!

It’s been lovely being on the island again after a year and a half away. I’ve been busy preparing the puffin study plot for the new season, mostly replacing and repairing posts marking study burrows 🔨

I’ve also checked the ~50 burrows included in the study using an infrared “burrowscope” (to avoid disturbing the birds). More than half of them had an egg already! 🥚

In the evenings, as the puffins return ashore in large numbers, I’ve also been trying to resight birds tagged with a miniature geolocator tracking their migration, I have resighted about 15 so far. I’ll try to catch these birds once they have chicks to retrieve the precious data stored on their logger.

Happy Earth Day! 🌍

Today to celebrate #earthday with @natgeouk, share a photo of your favourite spot with the hashtag #shareyourspot.

This is my favourite spot, Skomer Island in Wales, and I’m lucky to be on the island at the moment to do some fieldwork for my research. It’s a haven for hundreds of thousands of #seabirds and a place I never get bored of.

This photo shows South Haven, just behind our research station.

What is your favourite spot?
