Kudos to Rotex WA members Matthew, Baillie and Li-Gene who participated in the Quiz Night for the charity "Homelessness We Care", along with RYE committee members Lindsey and Jill.

It's always heartening to see how the Service Before Self tenet of Rotary is being continually honoured by our RYE students after their return from overseas exchange.

We have a new committee member! A warm welcome is extended to Rochelle, who has been appointed to the role of Placement Officer of Asia, America's and Turkey following Joanne's retirement from the committee.

Rochelle has written a short autobiography to share with us:
"I have been a member of the Rotary North Perth Club since 2015.
My prior experience with RYE has been with daughter Madeleine being an outbound student to Tandil, Argentina in 2020 as well as hearing about the many wonderful experiences my husband and his sister had when they were outbound students from Zimbabwe to New Zealand and Montana, USA.
My husband Stephen is also a member of Rotary North Perth Club and both of our fathers were also active members of Rotary for many years..
I joined the Rotary Youth Exchange Committee as I have always enjoyed interacting and learning about people from different cultures, and saw it as a great opportunity to work with other like-minded Rotarians to support youth from Western Australia and around the world to be part of a highly regarded and well structured cultural exchange program.
If I could be an Outbound RYE student I would choose to go to Italy as it is a beautiful and diverse country, and I love how they highly value their family and culture. Also, I have rarely met a carb I didn't like 🍰 😁"
District Governor Dee Buckland presented Rochelle with her name badge at the recent committee meeting.

At Saturday's final committee meeting for the 2020/21 Rotary year, we reluctantly farewelled Joanne who has been a wonderful asset and worker for Rotary Youth Exchange, and will be sorely missed.

This is her "short version" bio:

"I joined RYE...and Rotary in 2013, at the invitation of then RYE Chair Ian Gibbs. They needed a Secretary, so that was me! Baptism by fire 🤪
Next job was RYE Chair, for 3 years.
Highlights - friendship of RYE Committee, gaining overseas “family” members, getting to know those “special” students.
Future plans - who knows......... help more on the farm, bicycle riding around Perth river, babysitting!"

Thank you for your invaluable contributions Joanne!💐

Today a lovely Memorial function was held to celebrate the life well lived of past RYE Committee and Rotary Club of Heirisson member Doug Worthington. It was well attended by Rotarians, friends and former exchange students, some proudly wearing their blazers or RYE shirts.
Doug's family mentioned that they have received many condolence messages from around the world.
His passing is a great loss for Rotary and International Rotary Youth Exchange.

REBOUNDS DEBRIEFING Post 2 of 2:
The stories told by our returned Rotary Youth Exchange students at this year's Debriefing were both the same as in past years, but also vastly different to any we've heard before, due to the impact of the Corona Virus pandemic. For some the opportunity to learn their host country's language was diminished because of school closures during the lockdowns. One student felt that lockdown gave him improved language learning, from the extra time he spent with his host siblings, the one-on-one situation working better for him than learning in the classroom.
Some students returned home early and others were able to stay for the full year, but all have come back more mature and with new life skills.
The two week quarantine period upon return to Australia was a trial for some, finding the lack of human interaction difficult to endure, whilst another student felt that the time alone gave him an opportunity to reflect on his exchange.
Past RYE Committee Chair Joanne presented Jasmine with a prize gift voucher for winning the Outbounds Photo Competition.
Rebounds and Rotex D9455 members Li-Jene and Meleva spoke to the students about Rotex and Rotaract in WA .
District Governor Jon Bilson presented the students with certificates and RYE medallions, as well as a novel COVID19 pin for their blazers, to commemorate the extraordinary circumstances they faced during their exchanges.

VALE: DOUG WORTHINGTON

Sadly Doug left us on 09/03/2021 after an horrific but accidental car incident where he was a pedestrian on a footpath.

Doug was pursuing his passion in photography snapping the “Sculptures by the Sea” exhibition at Cottesloe Beach, Perth, WA.

We pass on our sincere respect and condolences to Penny and their family at this very sad time.

Doug, a Rotarian for many years and a Committee Member of Rotary Youth Exchange for eighteen years, loved his role as a Placement Coordinator.

He had a passion for the Program and had a special relationship with all the Exchange Students who came under his guidance.

They loved being photographed by Doug and he shared his art amongst many of them, some for a very long time.

Doug was also a Past President of the Rotary Club of Heirisson and the Rotary Club of Hollywood. He was also a multiple recipient of the prestigious Rotary award, the “Paul Harris Fellow”.

The Committee Members, past and present, of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program D9455 wish to acknowledge the valuable work he has performed for our Community throughout his Rotary career.

 “SERVICE ABOVE SELF”

💐 REST IN PEACE DOUG 💐

SUSPENSION OF EXCHANGE PROGRAM UPDATE:

It had been hoped that the District 9455 Rotary Youth Exchange Program could resume in some format by 2021. Regretfully, with all considerations taken into account the Program has had to be postponed once again.

The D9455 RYE Committee remains committed to the Program and will continue working behind the scenes to ensure that when the time is right the Program will be ready to recommence.

Rotary Youth Exchange has long been recognised as one of the premier Youth Programs within Rotary International. The benefits are numerous including the sharing of languages and culture across the globe, promoting youth leadership and understanding of other countries, lifelong international friendships and an introduction to the Rotary community for younger generations. RYE can be a springboard to other Rotary programs including Rotex, Rotaract and RYLA.

At this stage we are hoping to welcome a new group of Inbound students in July 2022 and sending a new group of Outbound students overseas in January 2023. We aim to be recruiting for new Outbound students in 2022.

The D9455 RYE Committee is grateful for the support it has received from the District and Clubs within D9455 as well as our Exchange Partners overseas, and looks forward to resuming the Rotary Youth Exchange Program when it is considered safe to do so.

Outbound Update:
Jasmine (sponsored by the Rotary Club of Subiaco) has provided some fabulous photos with her update on her exchange experiences in Sweden 🇸🇪.
“Despite the chilliness of Autumn and the onset of Winter, I’ve been having a wonderful time in Sweden as I near the end of my exchange year. As pictured below, watching the Autumnal colours progress throughout the season was a magical experience for me, and made for many beautiful walks through the forest (with occasional mushroom picking as well!).
I am really looking forward to experiencing a Swedish Christmas and learning more about the accompanying traditions, and spending time with my lovely host families and friends.
Best wishes to everyone back home for the holiday season!"
1. The first snow of Winter.
2. Members of the school choir (and myself as ‘Lucia’) performing traditional Lucia and Christmas carols at local retirement homes.
3. Swedish ‘fika’ - cinnamon bun and coffee.
4. Family home from the Viking era.
5. Local castle.

And then there were none😥
For the first time in... how long?... there are no Inbound students present here in District 9455 and none expected anytime soon.
Milan has arrived safely home in Italy 🇮🇹 and is in quarantine, but very happy to be reunited with his family. He was able to be photographed with them but could not stand in close proximity.
He was farewelled in Perth 🇦🇺 by present and past RYE Committee Chairs David Cleary and Joanne Bowen, as well as members of host club the Rotary Club of Mindarie and host parents Tracey Roberts (the Mayor of the City of Wanneroo) and Peter Roberts.

Outbound student Caitlin is on her way home from Japan 🇯🇵, having been sponsored for a great year of personal growth and education by the Rotary Club of Perth.
Caitlin's host district looks forward to her returning in the future to complete some of the exploration of their country that she was denied by the Corona virus pandemic.
Caitlin was farewelled by two of our past Inbound students, Keika (2019/20) and Koki (2018/19) as well as host District Rotarians and host family.

Outbound Update:
Claire returned home due to the impact COVID19 earlier this year from her exchange in Brazil 🇧🇷, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kununurra. Here are her reflections of her experiences:

"Like many people my year has been extremely impacted due to Covid 19, I started the year off in Brazil where I was welcomed with open arms. It didn’t take me long to fall in love with the country as straight off the plane I was brought to a carnival party and immediately introduced to a huge part of Brazilian culture, their love for music and dancing. I was fortunate enough to live in a small town called Tarumã with two different families. My families treated me as one of their own and wanted me to see and experience all that Brazil has to offer. I had the opportunity to travel to Rio with exchange students from all across the world and experience the final night of Carnival which was incredible. It didn’t take long and Brazil was in isolation and I sadly returned to Australia. Since returning I have had so much work including packing fruit, waitressing and a teacher’s aide. Next year I will go to university and study primary teaching which I realised I was interested in after helping teach english in my school in Tarumã and my host mum being a primary teacher. Whilst it hasn’t been the year I expected or planned I have learnt so much and made so many unforgettable memories so now I am just waiting until I can return to my families in Brazil and eat acai again."
