DIVA, the museum for diamonds, jewellery and silver in Antwerp Belgium ๐Ÿ‘‰ Masterpieces in miniature 05.03 - 15.08.2021
Before his death in 2001, Arthur Gilbert made it clear that his collection had to be preserved and made accessible for future generations. One way of doing this is through new acquisitions of contemporary pieces. This box was the first contemporary commission from the Gilbert Collection since it found a home at the V&A in 2008.

Jewellerโ€ฏSilvia Weidenbach combines goldsmithing with 3-D printing technology, using a secret recipe which she calls โ€˜moon dustโ€™. ๐ŸŒ™ After several months exploring theโ€ฏcollection, she created a series of objects for a display entitled Visual Feast.โ€ฏThis box is the pinnacle of the series.

๐Ÿฅ„ We all know spoons. They have been around for centuries in all kinds of shapes and sizes and belong to one of the oldest inventions by man! Nowadays, spoons are usually made on a large scale, but traditionally spoons were carved, and from the 15th century, forged in bronze, brass, tin and eventually silver. Just look at the craftsmanship of the Schapmans Brothers, the makers of these two coffee spoons!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Is there a craftsman or woman in you? Discover it in the spoon forging workshop from 25 to 29 August! During this workshop you will learn the basic technique for forging a spoon. You will practice with copper and when you have mastered the basic technique you can start working with silver. And if you want you can add a fork to this! ๐Ÿด

Today Arya, DIVAยดs intern working at the exhibition department, shares her #favoritobject โค๏ธ from our permanent collection โ€˜DIVA, a Brilliant Storyโ€™. And we couldnยดt agree more!

โ€œIโ€™m Arya from Hyderabad, India, and I am currently pursuing an interdisciplinary Liberal Arts degree (with a specialization in History, Anthropology and Sociology) at University College Roosevelt in Middelburg, the Netherlands. I chose this piece because I thought it symbolizes the global nature of the history of jewelry and the trade of jewels because of rubies (from Burma), sapphires (from Sri Lanka) and the emeralds (from India) that were put together by Gustave Baugrand. In the nineteenth century when the peacock became a personification of the femme fatale, and this piece signifies the power jewelry can hold in the lives of people. Also, I canโ€™t stop myself from admiring the beautiful craftmanship and the sheer skill that must have been warranted in the creation of this piece.โ€

โœ๏ธ In late 2016, DIVA made a successful bid at Bernaerts for a pen drawing on Dutch paper attributed to Bernard Picart (1673-1733): a design for the lid of a snuff box that can be dated after 1711. The artist drew inspiration from classical mythology: This scene is a variant of a 1668 painting by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711) in the #museummayervandenbergh, from which a print titled (Always Faithful Patronage) was published in 1670.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Under the theme 'the DNA of collecting', the drawing was integrated into the expo ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜”๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ, which shows a snuff box from Vienna with a variation on this classic theme elaborated in enamel by Philipp Ernst Schindler (1723-1793).

Finally, the summer holidays start in a few days! โ˜€๏ธ For many of us, this is the moment to get away from it all and seek out sunnier climates. Have you packed your bags yet? ๐Ÿงณ One of the basics is your toiletries. This was also true in the 17th century. From then onwards, toilet services included all accessories required for what was then the first social event of the day: the ceremony of getting dressed. Accessories such as a toothpick and ear spoon were made of silver. Throughout the centuries, more individual accessories were developed, such as this extravagant 18-carat-gold spirit flask.

๐Ÿ’ Today Suzanne de Lange, press and communications officer at DIVA, shares her #Favorite object โค๏ธ from #masterpiecesinminiature

"One of my favorite objects of the Gilbert Collection is definitely this golden snuffbox with enamel butterflies. Itยดs beautifully carved and makes me wonder if the original owner really used it as a snuffbox or as a showpiece? Tip: visiting the expo with kids? Let them hunt for the butterflies, fun guaranteed!

Hardstones are a recurring material in 18th-century German snuffboxes. They were almost exclusively sourced locally and variously carved, incised and encrusted to enhance their natural shades and patterns. The designer of this snuffbox is unknown but originates possibly from Dresden, ca. 1770.

In preparation for the #MasterpiecesInMiniature exhibition, the kneehole desk was professionally restored so that you could admire this exceptional piece of furniture in its optimal condition!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Moreover, the restorers were able to attribute the manufacture of the furniture to ๐—ก๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐˜, a younger contemporary of none other than Andrรฉ-Charles Boulle! Born in 1666, Sageot was first active as a cabinetmaker around about 1690. In 1698, he was admitted to the cabinetmakers' guild and worked as an ebeniste with inlay and marquetry. Sageot's main output was armoires, commodes and desks. His workshop flourished until around 1720 when, due to illness, he stopped working and sold his stock.

๐Ÿ” Monday Masterpiece ๐Ÿ”

Time to dress up! ๐Ÿ‘— Since weโ€™re recently allowed to go back to the office once a week, time to bring out those matching jewels, we think. ๐Ÿ’

How about these earrings and pendant that are part of a parure? In the 19th century, these were very popular with tourists in Italy! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น A parure is a set of matching jewelry meant to be worn together. On this parure, peasants in traditional regional costume are depicted with micromosaic. A technique in which small, coloured tiles of glass are placed in a particular pattern.

The scenes are based on Roman Costumes Drawn from Nature, a series of illustrations by Charles Hullmandel, published in 1820. ๐Ÿ“œ A taste for traditional regional costume and peasant life conveyed a powerful message in support of the rise of nationalism which shook Europe in the 1830s. In Italy, this movement was known as the Risorgimento.

๐Ÿ’ Today Inge Cloetens, registrator at DIVA, shares her #Favorite object โค๏ธ from #MasterpiecesInMiniature

As I admired this majestic object, I almost couldn't believe it was labeled a toy in England in the 18th century. ๐Ÿงณ It was primarily a personal stylish case for women to store their daily necessities. The "toy" element is mainly found in the chimes incorporated into the object, courtesy of clock and toymaker James Cox. ๐Ÿ•ฐ

The use of animals in ornamentation attracted me to this object. ๐Ÿ˜ The elephants at the bottom are carrying the whole object on their backs. ๐Ÿฆ‹ The butterflies flutter around happily with their colorful wings, while a graceful bird is showing off at the top. ๐Ÿฆ The two children near the clock add a playful touch to the whole.
All in gold with accents in pearls and imitation stones make this item a playground for the eyes!
