Happy National Indigenous History Month everyone!

As we use this month to celebrate the history, heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada, it seems only appropriate to look at the legacy left of Inuit in archival records across the world.

Revisit @inuittapiriitkanatami president Natan Obed’s examination of the records to see what history has been remembered and forgotten, and stay tuned for more Inuit history, art and otherwise, coming your way this month!

Read the full piece at #IAQOnline.

**content warning: residential schools and abuse**

The IAF stands with survivors, Indigenous communities and all those affected by the ongoing legacies of the residential school system. Our thoughts are with the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation as we grieve the loss of the 215 children at the Kamloops Indian Residential School.

It is impossible for many of us to comprehend the lived experiences carried by residential school survivors, and what stories those who didn’t survive would tell. The residential school system continues to have widespread impacts on Indigenous people across Canada, including those in the North. We join the national calls for justice and in recognition of this tragedy will continue to pause our communications until Monday, June 7.

We stand beside and offer the following resources for support to Indigenous communities in this time of grief. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help.

The national crisis line for residential school survivors is 1-866-925-4419.
You can also contact the Indian Residential School Survivors Society toll-free at 1-800-721-0066.
BC First Nations and Indigenous peoples can also reach the KUU-US Crisis Line Society at 1-800-588-8717 or online at kuu-uscrisisline.com

Now is an important time for all settler Canadians and citizens of the world to read, reread and reflect on this history and the calls to action and justice that need to be fulfilled, as outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Final Report published in 2015 and the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls published in 2019.

“I’m always drawn to the mark of the hand being visible in works of art—the roughed-up surfaces, covered with hatch marks as faces emerge from the chiseled stone, adds a quality that references the passing of time and the intimacy between the artist and material.” – Leanne Inuarak-Dall

“I’ve never been very athletic, but this sculpture reminds me of the time my friends and I joined our high school curling team just so we could appear to be well-rounded university candidates. We didn’t have the elegant form of the carved figures shown here, but certainly the blisters of stone from all that sweeping.” – Leanne Inuarak-Dall

“Due to the pandemic, I’ve found that I haven’t been taking the time to listen to new albums or podcasts—that was something I would usually do during my morning commute. This sculpture, with his satisfied smile and quiet contentment, reminds me of the joy of getting lost in the music.” – Leanne Inuarak-Dall
