Today we’re reflecting on Throwback Artist Spotlight Manno, a sculptor from Iqaluit, NU.

This outstanding work by Manno shows a polar bear looking down to meet his mirror image in the polished surface of the ice. With his strong technical skills and creative angle on a familiar subject matter, Manno creates an elegant sculpture that toured across the world in the 1971 exhibition “Sculpture of the Inuit: Masterworks of the Canadian Arctic.”

“Stone sculptures carry a lot of stories in their flesh. The skin takes so much physical energy to sand down, and creating the right type of shine means harnessing the right amount of pressure.” – Brian Kowikchuk

Hooked on you!

This week’s Throwback Artist Spotlight is Timothy Kuananapik, a sculptor and printmaker from Puvirnituq (Povungnituk), Nunavik, QC. Kuananapik first learned to carve from his father Paulusi who was one of the first carvers in the community. In this portrait of a fisherwoman, Kuananapik uses bold lines to bring attention to the markings on the woman’s face and mittens that mirror the lines on the three fish she just caught.
