Summer Spotlight #1! Meet Brian Wagenaar (he, him, his), one of our MEM mentors for the coming year. My name is Brian Wagenaar, and I am a second year Master’s in Environmental Management (MEM) student in the Global Sustainability Track. For my 600-hour project, I am working with the Paonia nonprofit Citizens for a Healthy Community (CHC) in their efforts to fend off fracking in the region, and to draft a climate action plan for Delta county. I joined LEAD Sustainability because I wanted to be part of all their cool projects, including managing the Rocket Composter, running FreeCycle, and hosting Earth Week. In my next year with LEAD Sustainability, I plan to work on campus recycling promotion (A natural crossover as I also work for facilities collecting recycling as a Zero Waste Assistant), integrating more environmental aspects and activities into freshman orientation, and promoting and expanding existing campus sustainability efforts in conjunction with the entire LEAD Sustainability team. To me, sustainability is all about living within the means of this planet and making efficient use of our shared resources like water, materials, and land. To achieve that sustainability, communities must work together on environmental initiatives like composting and recycling, water conservation and planning, and land management. The oft-cited and incredibly wise Native American proverb: “We do not inherit the land from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children” demonstrates that sustainability is future-focused, and that it means living our lives today in a manner that will allow the next generation to have the necessary resources to prosper tomorrow. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, traveling the west, trying new foods, petting dogs, and being on the river. I am super excited to work with the LEAD team and am planning to get a jumpstart on some projects this summer!
Congratulations to our 2020/2021 MEM Mentors for graduating yesterday! Sama received her Masters in Environmental Management and Demitra received her BA in Environment & Sustainability. Lucky for us, Demitra will stick around another year as she continues to pursue her MEM! Join us in congratulating these two amazing women! 💚
