May read: Telling Your Data Story by Scott Taylor 🧩
-
I was glad to take Scott’s advice and flipped my reading list upside down! His new book spoke directly to me in a way I wasn’t expecting. He called out the exact work that I’m doing, the common struggles of a data manager, and the path for success in utilizing data for achieving business goals. If you’re responsible for data management at your company, this is a must read. 👀
-
Efficient data management is typically the missing puzzle piece to many failed projects as many have heard the expression “garbage in, garbage out.” 🗑 It’s important that we, as data managers, emphasize the importance of clean data entry as it serves as a REUSABLE catalyst to future advanced applications. There are no good decisions that are made from bad data.
-
Data is NOT the new oil (instead like water), and I’d be happy to explain why. 💧

April read: Data Story by Nancy Duarte 🎙
-
I have to admit, I took my sweet time getting through this month’s read coming out of island time 🏝 But everyone knows there’s no better place to read than on the beach.
-
This book is one where I’ve seen many references to it, but I’ve never fully gone through it page by page. It’s a handy guide to add to your collection as many amazing authors & speakers frequently quote Nancy’s lessons. Now I’m stuck deciding which book to read next? Any suggestions? 💬

March read: Storytelling with Data by Cole Nussbaumer 🗣
-
I could read about data visualizations all day! Cole is such an effective storyteller and I love hearing her wisdom any chance I can. I finally wrote notes ✍🏼 in the book for the first time (usually like to keep it clean), but I kept finding answers to my questions or concerns on the following page. And I mean every time. 🤦🏻‍♀️ It was only proof to me that this book was really a comprehensive guide on how to tell a compelling story with great design.

I love being a part of the data+art community and hearing great minds passionately discuss these topics together.

How do you tell your story?

February read: Data Smart by John Foreman 🔬
-
This book is a great introduction to data science! But let me tell you, this book is DENSE. Certainly not for the passive-reader, this book is one to keep on hand because you’ll want to reference it over and over again for its many immediate business use cases, regardless of size.
-
This was also great timing while attending @snowdatascience_ ‘s Intro to Data Science bootcamp as it provided all the right context (check him out for more resources!)
-
You don’t have to be a data scientist to do data science.

January read: How Charts Lie by Alberto Cairo 📊
-
Highly recommend. It’s imperative that we as a society become more “graphically literate” to protect ourselves from the massive amount of misleading and biased information fed to us from all corners of our lives.
