Pied Kingfisher (Ceryle rudis)

Tamil Name - பொரி மீன்கொத்தி / வெள்ளை மீன்கொத்தி /கரும்புள்ளி மீன்கொத்தி

Water kingfisher widely distributed across Africa and Asia. Originally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, it has five recognised subspecies. Its black and white plumage and crest, as well as its habit of hovering over clear lakes and rivers before diving for fish, make it distinctive. Males have a double band across the breast, while females have a single gorget that is often broken in the middle. They are usually found in pairs or small family groups. When perched, they often bob their head and flick up their tail.

Black kite (Milvus migrans)

கள்ள பருந்து

Black kites are opportunistic hunters and are more likely to scavenge. They spend much time soaring and gliding in thermals in search of food.

Their flight is buoyant and the bird glides effortlessly, changing directions easily. They are attracted to smoke and fires, where they seek escaping prey. It has been claimed in native Australian beliefs, that kites spread fires by picking and dropping burning twigs so as to flush prey.

Indian Pond Heron(Ardeola grayii)

Tamil Name - குளத்துக் கொக்கு/
குருட்டுக் கொக்கு /மடையான்

The Indian pond heron or paddybird (Ardeola grayii) is a small heron. It is of Old World origins, breeding in southern Iran and east to the Indian subcontinent, Burma, and Sri Lanka. They are widespread and common but can be easily missed when they stalk prey at the edge of small water-bodies or even when they roost close to human habitations. They are however distinctive when they take off with bright white wings flashing in contrast to the cryptic streaked olive and brown colours of the body. Their camouflage is so excellent that they can be approached closely before they take to flight, a behaviour which has resulted in folk names and beliefs that the birds are short-sighted or blind.

Kashmir in Autumn

Betaab Valley was originally known as Hagan Valley or Hagoon.

Betaab valley is situated at a distance of 15 km from Pahalgam in Anantnag district in India's union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The valley got its name from the Sunny Deol-Amrita Singh hit debut film Betaab.

Surrounded by snow dressed mountain peaks, its landscape is dotted with trees like chinar, deodar, pine, willows & poplars, while the Lidder River with its bluish/green waters complements its beauty greatly.

Horse(Equus ferus)

Many historians often imply that horses are native to India, but this assumption is likely incorrect. Horses were first domesticated in the Eurasian steppe before being introduced to the rest of the world.

The first people to domesticate horses belonged to the Botai culture in northern Kazakhstan. Horses were mainly used as food, for rituals, and to make tools from their bones. There’s also some fascinating evidence suggesting the Botai used the milk of horses to make ceramic vessels.

I thought horses were native to India, but it turns out that is not the case. So who introduced horses to India, and why was horseback riding so quickly embraced by the native people?

The leading belief is that the Indo-Aryan peoples introduced domesticated horses in India during their migration from Central Asia about 3,500 to 4,000 years ago. Though some interpretations of sacred Hindu texts date Indian horses to much earlier times, there’s no concrete evidence to support the presence of horses in India before 2000 BCE.

Dandelion(Taraxacum)

சீமைக் காட்டுமுள்ளங்கி

It has been a Western tradition for someone to blow out a dandelion seedhead and think of a wish they want to come true.

Raw dandelion greens contain high amounts of vitamins A, C, and K, and are moderate sources of calcium, potassium, iron, and manganese.Raw dandelion greens are 86% water, 9% carbohydrates, 3% protein, and 1% fat.A 100 gram (3+1⁄2oz) reference amount supplies 45 calories.

The entire plant, including the leaves, stems, flowers, and roots, is edible and nutritious, with nutrients such as Vitamins A and K as well as Calcium and Iron. Dandelions are found on six continents and have been gathered for food since prehistory, but the varieties commercially cultivated for consumption are mainly native to Eurasia and North America. A perennial plant, its leaves grow back if the taproot is left intact. To make leaves more palatable, they are often blanched to remove bitterness, or sauteed in the same way as spinach.

The dandelion is the only flower that represents the 3 celestial bodies of the sun, moon and stars. The yellow flower resembles the sun, the puff ball resembles the moon and the dispersing seeds resemble the stars.
