Here’s a weekend remake of “Pangea,” a mashup of Death Valley and the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon in Iceland. There’s new toning and lots of subtle adjustments to the horizon and sky. I haven’t been to the lagoon in five years. I wonder what it will look like the next time I get back there; it’s been called ground zero for #climatechange. Terrifying.

Yes, it's a bit early for Halloween. But in these bizarre times, it seems that EVERY day is Halloween—just wish there were more treats than tricks. I thought that this remake of "Overflight" captures the chaos and divisiveness roiling the world now. The art consists of a highly abstracted close-up of birch tree bark. For those who follow me, you might recognize the all-purpose birds that I sometimes add to images to generate tension with other elements and create the illusion of height and depth. What do you see here?

Sometimes you just need a color pop to motor through a dreary-looking Monday. This is a highly abstracted close up section of the Harpa center in Reykjavik. No, it doesn’t actually look like this, color-wise, but it’s an amazing structure to visit and photograph. Hope your week is off to a shining brilliant start.

(Aha, just as I posted this the sun came out—perhaps the post sent a message! Coincidentally, I just finished reading the wonderful Kazuo Ishiguro, Klara and the Sun, a wonderful piece of speculative fiction. I guess I have solar vibes on my mind!)

Here's a new glass block portal image. This one lies between intention and accident. I'd intended to embed one of my "Flights of the Imagination” pieces ( #7, birds seen in Kalamazoo Michigan superimposed over an abstracted Icelandic glacier--swipe to view). But I accidentally left a duplicate layer that I'd shifted to the right. The result was a ghosting of the birds and brush, a change of hues in the ground area, and an overall brightening of the image. Hmm, "This is interesting,”I thought. So I added a third layer and intentionally shifted it as well. The result was a radial, funnel-like effect. (I also added a bit of motion blur to amp up the sense of movement. (Yes, an animation is in the works.) What do you think of the multi-layered image, compared to the single layer image? Good or bad accident? Where does your art typically lie in the spectrum between intention and accident?

More New York. This is a newly reprocessed take on an older image, with a new layer (the buildings in the background) and the detail extraction technique I've been using for urban composites lately. Hope the bright hues and energy help get your Sunday off to a zippy start!

I’m still in a New York (photo montaging) frame of mind. Here’s a new image with bits and pieces of seven photos taken during a visit to the City a few years ago—any metropolis can make for interesting composites. But there’s always something special about the New York vibe! Can you feel it?

I'm always on the lookout for opportunities to recycle and blend old images in new ways. This composite work consists of multiple street photos that I took in New York City back in 2017 and 2018. The lead image is the most intricate, with 10 separate layers. Swipe to see an intermediate version. The bottom is simpler, but it sports an ornate balustrade that I photographed in the Museum of Natural History (at first blush it looks like a parking meter). Swipe again to see the simplest form of the composite. Any preferences? And what do you think of the treatment (extreme detail extraction)?

After my last post, I made a mental note to do another focusing on the geological layers (the roiling clouds were the main show in that image). So, here it is. The moment I step foot in an area where treeless mountains and landforms define the view,  I'm awed by the ever-present sense of geological time reflected in the layers resting upon layers of various rock and mineral formations. That's something lacking in cities, where we have little sense of geo time--it's as if the concrete and glass forms that define the environment just sprang up out of nowhere. The images are from Zion National Park, Utah, Death Valley, CA, and the Grand Canyon in Arizona. What's your experience with landscape and time? (And do you like this video format for presenting thematically-related images?)

Thinking about heavy weather in New England this morning as Hurricane Henri approaches (looks like we'll miss the worst of it in the Boston area). What came to mind is an image from a trip to Zion National Park a couple of years ago. Torrential rains were punctuated by layers of sunlight. Then, in a matter of minutes, the sky totally cleared and the sun prevailed. I'm sure this atmospheric drama plays out throughout the year, but it was still magical to me. What emotions does this primordial scene evoke?

Here's a fanciful remake of an older image of Boston’s Zakim Bridge, inset into my glass block portal and re-toned (I'm into blues these days). It’s also newly decked out with a starry night. I thought that the curves of the handrail of the pedestrian path--not part of the bridge; the shot was taken from a nearby park--would complement the swirls of the glass block. I also thought that the sharp geometric structures of the bridge would create strong graphic tension with the more organic patterns of the glass block. If you want to see the image without the starry sky (imported from Utah), swipe to view. Any preferences?

A new "ship in a bottle"--rather, ship in a glass block portal--image. The swirling patterns in the glass seemed like a good complement for the ripples in the waters of Boothbay Harbor, Maine. The treatment also seems fitting for second "blue" day of rain in New England.

Here's my latest @cambridgeside video collaboration with motion designer @luissoco . Luis did a great job of animating my BoothBay Harbor paddle boarder photo, which I posted in May. The video is now displayed on CambridgeSide’s' 30 x 10 foot wraparound LED wall. It's a cool summer attraction at the mall!
