Do not be fooled by those colourful fins, this is a Scorpionfish.

As their name indicates, most species have a spine that produces venom and its sting can be painful, or even poisonous, so be sure to give these interesting looking creatures a wide berth.

Scorpionfish can grow up to 3 feet (1 m) long, and you’ll see most species camouflaged on the reef or on the ocean floor. They use their camouflage abilities to ambush their prey, such as smaller fish or other small creatures. They also have a wide mouth that can extend in order to swallow prey entirely.

Disclaimer : that's not me scaring this poor mousa fish. I hust happened to be around with my camera.

The word sole in English, French, and Italian comes from its resemblance to a sandal, Latin 'solea'. In other languages, it is named for the tongue, e.g. Greek: γλώσσα, German: Seezunge, Dutch: zeetong or tong, Hungarian: nyelvhal, Spanish: lenguado, Arabic: لسان الثور‎ lisan Ath-thawr (for the common sole) meaning 'the tongue of ox' in Qosbawi accent.

Peek-a-boo with a feather duster worm 😜

Sabellidae or feather duster / fan worms don’t have a face and eyes, but they are able to detect changes in the light and use that light sensitivity to protect them from predators.

Their oldest fossils are known from the Early Jurassic.

Scorpionfish are camouflage experts, preferring to hide motionless in holes or under corals to ambush prey. The spines on the dorsal and pectoral fins are venomous, causing swelling and severe pain. A diver would almost have to lean on one to get stung, because they just don't move. If you do get stung, immerse the injury in water as hot as you can stand. Heat denatures the protein material of the venom.
