Day 5 of Te Wiki Ote Reo Māori – Māori Language Week.

Faculty member George Tongariro shared his karakia with us. George says "..this karakia is normally used at the start of the day or the start of an event. I personally use this before I go out on the water for a fish or a dive.."

Karakia is generally used to increase the spiritual goodwill of a gathering, so as to increase the likelihood of a favourable outcome. It is also considered a formal greeting when beginning a ceremony.

Here is an example of some gorgeous smocking from our year 1 student Olivia Sharpe, sent through from her Lecturer Pip Stevenson 🪡✂️

Smocking is an embroidery technique used to gather fabric so it can stretch. Smocking was practical for garments to be both form fitting and flexible, hence its name derives from smock - a farmer's work shirt. It was extensively used in the 18th and 19th centuries.

What to do when you have no motivation?

You'll struggle with motivation as long aren't caring for yourself. Sleep-deprivation, a poor diet and lack of leisure time are just a few things that can make trudging through the day more difficult than ever.

Create a healthy self-care plan that allows you to take care of your mind and body:

⭐️Exercise regularly
⭐️Get plenty of sleep
⭐️Drink water, and eat a healthy diet
⭐️Make time for leisure and fun
⭐️Use healthy coping skills to deal with stress
⭐️Avoid unhealthy habits, like binge eating and drinking too much alcohol

Clearhead is a virtual well being assistant for Whitecliffe students, it has a range of resources and personalised Wellbeing plans to help you manage your mental wellbeing.
