What food should children eat to enhance immunity?

Immunity is directly linked to an efficient digestive system and how readily your body absorbs nutrients. 

Naturally ripened seasonal fruits enhance immunity if taken in moderation.

Remember, the best time to eat fruits is before noon, and their best consumed at the beginning of a meal, or on their own.

Gooseberry, seasonal mango, grapes and pomegranate deserve special mention. Fresh fruits are always preferred, however figs and dates are exceptions.

Soups made from free-range meat and poultry are also good. Chicken, goat and game are generally advised for strengthening immunity. Slow-cooked meat with soft spices is also advisable.

What are the dietary guidelines for asthmatics?

Asthma is characterized by the contraction of smooth muscle in smaller units of the lungs called bronchioles, which partially abstract can cause extreme difficulty in breathing. 

In asthmatics, triggers range from pollen, dust and polluted air to specific foods, heavy meals and emotional factors.

Ayurveda considers the trigger can be simple indigestion as well. Light and warm meals are always advised for asthmatics.

Soft spices are suggested in moderation. Add cumin, turmeric and black pepper to food if you are accustomed to such spices.

Asafoetida, dry ginger, long pepper, garlic and onion must be a part of your diet.

All sweeteners, except jaggery, are to be avoided.

Milk products have to be consumed warm, so mixed combinations of cheese, cream and others are not advisable. Goat's milk or camel milk are preferred options. 

The nature and quantity of food can have a direct impact on the condition. So eat just enough to sate your hunger.

Have boiled warm water with every meal. Stay away from oily, fried, frozen and cold foods.

Can my diet help alleviate the symptoms of my arthritis?

Yes, you can reduce the severity of symptoms by being careful with your dietary choices. For instance, white flour, red meat, sweets and desserts should be added. 

Say no to cheesy, salty and oily food in general and remember to drink adequate amounts of water during the day. 

Certain herb-infused hot drinks, which are similar to tea, are highly beneficial, such as coriander seeds, in boiled water, although you should only consume 2-3 cups a day.

And early, light dinner and eating at least two hours before bed are also important factors. 

Foods that are heavy and difficult to digest should not be part of your meals, special at dinner. 

Switch to warm liquid meals, such as soups, instead.

Ancient systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda, suggest a stroll for half a kilometre after dinner.

Kizhi 

In Ayurvedic context, Kizhi refers to a cloth bag filled with herbs or other ‘cooked’ medicinal ingredients, which is then applied over the body. 

One form of this therapy uses medicinal leaves which are roasted and powdered, then are added to medicinal herbs. The combination is then cooked with other ingredients and tied up in a ‘kizhi’. 

In Navarakizhi, The Healers’ use a specific combination of medicinal rice (Navara) having rejuvenating properties, and medicinal herbs.
